Tours, Trainings and Group Visits
Central Library
What we offer
During your tour or group visit, we can provide:
- Stories, booktalks and scavenger hunts for preschoolers through eighth graders
- A tour of the building highlighting resources appropriate for fourth through eighth graders
- Viewing of the eco-roof from windows overlooking the roof
- An overview of resources in a subject area
- Research support to those working on independent projects
- A brief presentation about library materials and services
- Self-guided tour information
- Library card registration
- A guided tour that features the library's history and the building's art and architecture, including the eco-roof. Groups are limited to 10 or fewer and registration is required.
We appreciate advance notice of groups coming to use the library, even if you don’t need any special services.
Guidelines for all groups
- We require at least two weeks advance notice to a tour or presentation. We cannot schedule your visit more than three months in advance.
- The minimum group size is six people.
- For Internet access, you must have a library card or a guest pass. ID is required to get a guest pass.
- ID is required to use the microfilm machines for older magazine and newspaper articles.
- Eco-roof viewings from windows overlooking the roof are limited to a maximum of 12 people and advance registration is required. Learn more.
- If you teach in a K-12 school within Multnomah County, you may schedule a presentation from School Corps librarians. Learn more.
Guidelines for preschool through eighth-grade groups
- We can provide storytimes and tours only on week days, during the library's open hours. We cannot provide storytimes or tours during evening hours.
- Classes wishing to hear booktalks must schedule at least three weeks in advance.
- We can accommodate up to 35 people.
Guidelines for high school and adult groups
- Please contact us to schedule a training on library resources in the subject you're interested in.
- We can provide trainings only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
- We can accommodate up to 40 people.
Library cards
- Valid library cards are required to check out materials and access the Internet.
- If you are bringing more than six people for library cards, you must apply in advance.
- Please return all your applications to Central Library at least a week before your visit.

Lunch and storage space
Central Library’s U.S. Bank Room is available free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, visit Public Meeting Rooms or call 503.988.5234.
The library does not have a space to store lunches, bags or coats.
Parking
Central Library is on S.W. 10th Ave. between S.W. Yamhill and Taylor streets.
The library does not have a parking garage and does not validate parking. There are several parking garages near the library. MAX stops are close by on S.W. Morrison and Yamhill streets, street car stops are on S.W. 10th and S.W. 11th avenues between S.W. Taylor and Yamhill streets, and TriMet bus stops are a few blocks away.
