SICs & NAICS

Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) was the first system widely used within the United States to classify industries and types of business by a numeric code. Created in the 1930s, the SIC system is being replaced by the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). NAICS codes reflect the vast changes in the U.S. economy, and also classify industries in Canada and Mexico.

Knowing the SIC or NAICS code for your business is helpful when searching for marketing information in Web sites, databases, or printed resources. To identify your business' code, go to www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html or use the NAICS or SIC Manuals available at the Science ∓ Business Reference Desk located on the 2nd floor of the Central Library
