Library Catalog > Search Help > Advanced Search
Advanced Search
To do an advanced search, click "More search options" from the catalog.
The boxes in the upper left portion of the screen allow you to do an advanced keyword search, combining author, title, subject and notes searches.
You can also combine searches using AND, OR and NOT. For more about this, see Search Tips.
The advanced search screen allows you to limit and sort your search in the following ways:
- Collection: This is the same box that appears on the main screen of the catalog. Use it to limit your search to materials for children, teens or adults; to items owned by a particular library location; or to materials in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese or Russian.
- Location: Limit to items owned by a particular library.
- Language: Limit items by language.
- Year: Limit to materials published before or after a certain year.
- Material type: Limit by format such as book, DVD, video, book on cassette, etc. You can limit to multiple types (for example, DVD and Video) by selecting one format and holding down the Ctrl key to select additional formats.
The last box on the screen allows you to choose how you would like the records to be sorted. "Relevance" lists the best matches for your search first; "Title" sorts alphabetically by title; and "Date" sorts chronologically with the most recent items appearing first.
You can also do exact searches for author, title, author/title, subject, series title, publisher and number.
If you've already done a search and want to limit or sort it, click "Limit/sort" or "Modify search" at the top of the screen. This will bring you to an advanced search screen.
