Black Composers of Oregon Past and Present

Join Aszemar Glenn, noted composer, pianist and conductor, for a lecture and performance that celebrates black musicians. The program will include a presentation and solo piano suite of former Portland Parks Bureau music director Richard C. Moffatt's "American Dance Suite." The performance will culminate in a world premier performance of Glenn's own piano suite "SSS."

My Soul Grown Deep

The spoken word will be brought to life as BaseRoots Theatre Company shares the epic saga of Africans in the Americas, from slavery to leader of the free world in 300 years. Professional actors will lead audiences on a chorale exploration of African American poetry, performing 26 different poems from Phillis Wheatley to Saul Williams to local poets. Not recommended for children.

African American Read-In

Local celebrities and community leaders read from works by their favorite African American writers. Fiction and nonfiction for children and adults will be featured in an afternoon of good words from great works.

Learn tricks and techniques for getting the most information possible from the Oregonian Historical Archives database. This new resource is amazing for finding obituaries, death and funeral notices, and can be a great source for researching your house history.
