Every Family Reads

Jon Scieszka

Thousands of families participated in Multnomah County Library’s new reading promotion program, Every Family Reads. Every Family Reads encourages families with children in grades K-5 to read together by uniting them around the works of a children’s author.

Over 26,000 young readers and their families participated by signing a pledge to read together during March and April. At sign-up, each family received a complimentary book for their home library, as well as a project guide with information and activity suggestions.

Every Family Reads is a three-year pilot project funded by The Library Foundation with the support of the Allen Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, and PGE Foundation. Special thanks to our sponsors, partner schools, community groups, organizations and volunteers, who helped make this year’s project such a success.

Jon Scieszka has been selected as the featured author for Every Family Reads 2009 (March 1, 2009 through April 30, 2009). Jon Scieszka, the author of children’s favorites like The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, was recently named the country’s first national ambassador for young people’s literature by the Library of Congress. Jon will be in Portland April 19 & 20.
