Our family pledges to (choose as many as you like):
- Start a Family Reading Night in our home by setting aside at least one night a week to read together.
- Read together or listen to audiobooks together three to five days a week for at least 15 minutes each time.
- Schedule a weekly outing to the library.
Keep it light
Reading is fun — the last thing you want to do is make it feel like drudgery.
Family reading tips & suggestions
- Read to your children every day until they are able to read to themselves, and then keep reading together! Sharing a love of stories is a great way to reinforce bonds with family members as well as with books.
- Let your children see you reading and writing in the language(s) that are most comfortable to you. Stock your home library with books in English and books in your home language, and let your children read at home for fun in whichever language they prefer.
- Reading happens all the time! Cook with your children to develop literacy by reading recipes and ingredients. Read the directions together for a new toy or tool. Point out signs when out in the car or on a walk. Ask your children to read the menu at a restaurant.
- Visit the library. Help your children get their own library cards. Meet the library staff together. Help them become comfortable finding things and asking for help when they visit.
- Respect your children's choices. The story might not be to your liking, but what matters most is that they keep turning the pages. Guide your children's reading, but don't censor unless necessary.
- Again, Again, Again! Enjoy a favorite book together. Find a way to make it fresh!
