There are many places around the world where wars, terrorism, civil wars, insurrections and other conflicts are happening, in addition to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East and Sudan.

Global Peace Index

The Institute for Economics and Peace, in conjunction with the Economist Intelligence Unit and with the guidance of an international team of academics and peace experts, has compiled the Global Peace Index (GPI). The Index is composed of 23 indicators, ranging from a nation's level of military expenditure to its relations with neighbouring countries and the level of respect for human rights. The index has been tested against a range of potential “drivers” or determinants of peace - including levels of democracy and transparency, education and national well being. Displayed on a global map.

BBC Middle East protests: Country by country

Starting with a young man burning himself to death in Tunisia, the protests led to the resignation of President Ben Ali of Tunisia on 1/14/2011 and then to the resignation of President Mubarak of Egypt on 2/11/2011. Often organized on internet social media, these movements have broadened their scope and have inspired people in every country of the Middle east to demand change.
