Federal records
The Federal Government has many records of interest to genealogists. The U.S. Census (which Janet treats as "local" information because it is arranged by county and city within a state) has been covered earlier.
There are land records and military records -- and records for military pensions. There are records of the Federal Governement's relations with Native Americans and with reservations. There are Immigration records, Social Security records, and records of the Japanese Internment in WW II and of alien registration in WW I. Some of the most useful because they are indexed and include a very large diverse group of people are the land records, military records, and Social Security.
