Finding Guidebooks in the Library Catalog

For an introduction to hikes in a specific region, look for a guidebook in the Library Catalog. There are several ways to search for this information.

Super Search

First, try Super Search, truncating your search terms with a question mark to obtain all variations of a word as follows:

The above searches retrieve all variations of the word hike (hikes, hiking, etc.) and all variations of words representing the geographic regions (Olympic Peninsula, Olympic Mountains, Olympics; Wallowas, Wallowa County).

Subject Headings

Follow this search with a second strategy using subject headings. For a complete list of guidebooks in a state or region, first select Subject Headings and then enter terms like these:

To use the third and most comprehensive strategy, select Subject Headings and enter a general heading such as:

Scroll down through an alphabetical list of subheadings to see all the geographic regions and types of materials available for the state, country or region with which you began.

On the Shelf

A reference section of Pacific Northwest hiking and travel books is housed in the Humanities North room in the general call number areas of 917.95 (Oregon) and 917.97 (Washington). Duplicate circulating copies are available for most of these reference titles. For help in locating them, ask at the Humanities North desk.
