Why will the library be closed from Sunday, April 12, to Sunday, April 19?

The library will be closed for carpet installation.
It will take eight days to complete a carpet installation of this size and scope.
This is the first renovation in the public area since the library opened 12 years ago.
It would be impossible to install the carpet during open hours given the high number of patrons who visit Midland daily.

Why is the checkout period of the item I borrowed more than three weeks?

The days that the library is closed for carpet installation will not count toward the number of days in your checkout period.

What will happen to my holds if they are on the shelf at Midland during the closure?

The days that the library is closed will not count toward the number of days that an item is held on the shelf.

Where can I return my items during the closure?

You can still return items at Midland. The outside book drop will be open during the closure.
You can return items at any other Multnomah County library.

What if I return overdue items at Midland during the closure?

Items returned at Midland during the closure will be back dated to the last open day, Saturday, April 11.

You can pay fines online, or in person at any other Multnomah County library. You can also pay fines by phone during Central Library's operating hours; call the Renewal Line at 503.988.5342 and press #2 to speak to a staff member. To pay your fines by mail, send a check to Circulation Services, Central Library, 801 S.W. Ave., Portland, OR 97205.

Why is the library doing this when the county is short on funding?

The money for this project is from the county’s capital improvement fund. It was allocated for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30. This is money that cannot be reallocated.
