Curtis' keen, gentle sense of humor helps his readers grapple with the intense issues in his books, such as homelessness and racial tension. The powerful support of family is another theme that figures prominently in Curtis' books and in his life. His daughter Cydney contributed the unforgettable lyrics to the song Mommy Says No in Bud, Not Buddy, and his son Steven typed the longhand drafts of Curtis' books into their home computer. Curtis credits his wife Kaysandra for jump-starting his career by allowing him to quit his day job and then teasing him that he "better hurry up and start doing something constructive with his life or else start looking for a new place to live." After his lecture, Curtis will autograph his books, which will also be available for purchase. To learn more about Christopher Paul Curtis, visit Random House's author biography. You can also read about the author's visit to Powell's Books in 2000. KIDS: Check out this author profile from KidsReads!
