READ ABOUT GANTOS
|
Mr. Gantos received his first diary in the second grade. His mother had given his older sister a diary, and because he wanted to do whatever his big sister did, he "howled and sobbed" until he received a journal of his own. At first, he recorded the date and the weather and described his meals. When a family move prompted him to start storing his collections in his diaries, he began to write about his stamps, photographs, baseball cards, bugs, bottle caps and pennies.
Mr. Gantos has written more than 30 books for children and adults. Two award committees affiliated with the American Library Association, the Michael L. Printz (young adult) and the Robert F. Sibert (nonfiction), have recently named Gantos' memoir of a turbulent late adolescence and early adulthood, Hole in My Life, a 2003 Honor Book. Joey Pigza Loses Control is a 2001 Newbery Honor Book and Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is a National Book Award Finalist. Mr. Gantos' other honors include a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Mr. Gantos lives with his wife and daughter in Boston, Massachusetts. He devotes his time to writing books and educational speaking. |
