About Paterson and Her Lecture

Katherine Paterson photo by Samantha Loomis PatersonPaterson's lecture will explore how books offer different perspectives to readers. Paterson's characters are often young outcasts who grapple with tough issues such as death, jealousy and abandonment. Her books teach readers the lessons her characters learn, although her insights are never preachy or trite. Paterson explains, "I have learned, for all my failings and limitations, that when I am willing to give myself away in a book, readers will respond by giving themselves away as well, and the book I labored over so long becomes in our mutual giving something far richer and more powerful than I could have ever imagined."

Two of Paterson's novels have earned the distinguished Newbery Medal: Bridge to Terabithia in 1978 and Jacob Have I Loved in 1981. The Great Gilly Hopkins is a 1979 Newbery Honor book. In addition to the Newbery prizes for these three books, more than 20 national and international organizations have recognized 10 of her other books with awards. Ten colleges and universities have granted Paterson honorary degrees, and she has received 18 different awards for the entire body of her work. In 2000, the Library of Congress named Paterson a "Living Legend."

After her lecture, Paterson will greet people and distribute autographed bookplates. Her books will be available for sale courtesy of Annie Bloom's Books.
