Read to the Dogs aims to create a relaxed, non-judgemental environment for young readers. In the program, only the dogs may make corrections, and since they never do, readers can read without the fear of making mistakes.
The dog-and-handler teams are certified volunteers from the Dove Lewis Animal Assisted Therapy and Education Program.
Reading aloud to dogs:
- Increases enthusiasm for reading
- Develops reading skills
- Teaches children how to interact with pets
- Promotes confidence
