Library promotes multilingual literacy with annual celebration

PORTLAND, OR – Several Multnomah County libraries will celebrate multilingual literacy with Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros festivals in April. This is the eighth year the library has celebrated Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros, an internationally recognized event.

Families are invited to come to the Fairview-Columbia, Gregory Heights, Gresham, Holgate, Midland, North Portland, Rockwood and St. Johns libraries for a variety of performances and activities in both Spanish and English. These fun events will celebrate the power and magic that books bring to children. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Gregory Heights Library will celebrate Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros on Saturday, April 22, with music and dance performances from 1–4 p.m. Entertainment will include music by Mariachi Viva Mexico, as well as flamenco dancers. Fairview-Columbia Library's celebration will take place on Monday, April 24 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Activities include The Barking Mouse puppet show by Hay Caramba, as well as craft activities for children. On Thursday, April 27, Gresham Library will celebrate Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros from 10 a.m.–1 p.m., with art activities and information provided by local community groups and agencies. Grupo Condor will play traditional Latin American music, and bilingual clown Angel Ocasio will entertain children. School groups are invited to attend Gresham Library's celebration and should call 503.988.5414 to schedule their visits. Gresham Library is located at 385 N.W. Miller Ave., Gresham. St. Johns Library will celebrate on Friday, April 28. Events will take place from 2–5 p.m., beginning with a visit from clown Angel Ocasio. Mariachi Viva Mexico will perform lively music. St. Johns Library is located at 7510 N. Charleston Ave. Call 503.988.5397 for more details.

North Portland Library's Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros celebration will take place Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Activities will include a performance by bilingual clown Angel Ocasio, a music concert by Grupo Condor and craft workshops. Rockwood Library will also celebrate Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros on Saturday, April 29. Activities are scheduled from 1–5 p.m. and include music, dance and art workshops with Grupo Condor, dancer Rebecca Martinez and artist Kathy Karbo. Rockwood Library is located at 17917 S.E. Midland Library will celebrate Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros on Sunday, April 30. There will be stories, crafts and activities from noon–3 p.m. Entertainment will include Mexican folkdancing with Papalotl, a bilingual puppet show, and music by the Binnsmead Middle School Marimba Band.
