PORTLAND, OR – School Library Journal's "First Steps" column by Multnomah County Library's Renea Arnold and Nell Colburn was recently named the best column of the year by the Association of Educational Publishers.

"First Steps" discusses early literacy topics and issues in early childhood development on a bimonthly basis. Arnold and Colburn, who both specialize in early childhood at the library, report on cutting-edge research and provide advice on the hottest issues facing libraries that offer early literacy services.

"Over the past few years, the column has become a 'must-read' for librarians who work with very young children," said School Library Journal Editor-in-Chief Brian Kenney.

School Library Journal is a major professional tool for youth librarians, subscribed to by most school and public libraries for its timely advice on programs and services, as well as reviews of children's and teen books for library collections.
