PORTLAND, OR Celebrate Teen Read Month! This October, join Multnomah County Library and local teens, parents, educators, mentors and booksellers to encourage teens to read just for the fun of it. All month long, the library will offer teens opportunities to get involved with libraries and reading.
The fifth annual Teen Author Lecture highlights Teen Read Month. This year, the lecture presents Jacqueline Woodson, author of such titles as If You Come Softly, Hush and Miracle's Boys. In 2006, Woodson received a Newbery Honor for her book Show Way as well as the Margaret A. Edwards Award in honor of her lifetime contribution to writing for teens.
Woodson speaks at Parkrose High School in Portland on Monday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Tickets ($10 adults; $5 students K12) are available beginning Sept. 18 at Library Administration, Central, Gresham, Hillsdale, Hollywood, Midland and North Portland libraries, as well as at Parkrose High School Library and several area bookstores. For more information, call 503.988.5402.
During October, teens in grades 612 can enter to win a $100 Fred Meyer gift card when they get involved at the library. Teens are eligible by participating in any Teen Read Month program, including the Teen Author Lecture; visiting a teen lounge; attending a teen council meeting; or by reading a book or listening to an audiobook.
Teen councils are new! Council members work with library staff to make the library teen friendly. Teens are welcome to attend teen council meetings at Capitol Hill, Fairview-Columbia, Gresham, Hillsdale, Holgate or Northwest libraries. Get your voice heard, make new friends, learn new skills, help the library, and have fun!
Other new teen programs include Podcasting for Teens, Dance Dance Revolution and Intro to Djing: Mixing the Music You Like. Search Event Finder at www.multcolib.org/events for more teen programs, or pick up a brochure at any library or Fred Meyer location in Multnomah County.
