PORTLAND, OR Every Family Reads, Multnomah County Library's new reading program, encourages families with children in grades K5 to read together by uniting them around the works of a children's author each spring. The 2007 program features Newbery Medal winner Avi, author of such acclaimed titles as The End of the Beginning, The Mayor of Central Park, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and Crispin: The Cross of Lead.
To participate, families may visit any neighborhood library beginning March 1 and sign a pledge to read together (or listen to audiobooks together or visit the library together) during March and April. At sign-up, each family receives a complimentary Avi book for their home library (while supply lasts).
Many library events support the program, including read-ins, craft-making and puppet theatre. Barnes & Noble bookstores host Avi book discussion groups for children and families. The Central Library Collins Gallery features Exploring the Life of an Author: Avi from March 23 through May 13. The exhibit features Avi photographs, journals and artwork, as well as an authentic Newbery Medal.
Meet the author at the 10th annual Children's Author Lecture on April 10! The lecture ($10 adults; $5 students K-12) takes place at the First Congregational Church, 1126 S.W. Park Ave., Portland, 6:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale in early March at several libraries and bookstores. To order tickets by mail or for more information, call 503.988.5402.
Every Family Reads participants who read at least two Avi books between March 1 and April 30 can enter to win a $1,000 shopping spree to build their family library (one entry per family). The drawing has been generously sponsored by Boone Bridge Books.
Visit the Every Family Reads website at www.multcolib.org/familyreads for a list of Avi's books, an author biography, discussion questions and events listings. Every Family Reads books and materials are most appropriate for children in grades K5.
Every Family Reads is made possible by The Library Foundation and the generous support of PGE Foundation and Meyer Memorial Trust.
