PORTLAND, OR – On Sunday, Jan. 28 from noon–3 p.m., Central Library (801 S.W. 10th Ave.) is hosting a party in the Periodicals room to celebrate the addition of zines to the library's circulating collection.

"What's a zine?" you might ask. Zines are independently produced, non-commercial publications that come in all shapes, sizes and topics. Each presents unique information, and local zinesters (people who write, edit and produce zines) are a vital part of the literary and artistic life of our community.

"As zines have become more and more popular with readers, it's a natural step for the library to make them available to all our customers," said Director of Libraries Molly Raphael, noting that like books, DVDs and other materials, zines can now be selected and reserved through the library's catalog. "We're very excited to bring this new collection online."

The library's zine collection and programming have been driven by the creativity of the Zine Library Group, six librarians from various points within the library system who share a passion for this unique format. "Our goal is to increase the library's involvement with zine culture through events, outreach to local zinesters, and, of course, the new zine collection," says member Emily-Jane Dawson, a reference librarian at Central Library.

The Zine Library Group has created a special zine site on the library's website that provides a history of zines, includes resources for local zinesters, and offers PDX Zines a tool to find places to read, look at, buy or sell zines in the Portland area.
