Music

The Music collection emphasizes a wide variety of musical styles, genres, and traditions, and includes books, musical scores, and recorded music. The collection contains reference materials, bibliographies & discographies, histories, biographies, and works about music business, song-writing, publishing, and recording. The library is increasing its emphasis on recorded music, and particularly on cds of popular music. (For the purposes of this collection, "popular" means music outside of the western classical tradition, including jazz, rock and roll, salsa, blues, folk music, top 40, country, afro-pop, and so on.)

Books in the Music collection focus on a wide variety of areas, including materials that assist musicians (amateur and professional) in pursuit of their vocation and avocation, recording, songwriting, performing, publishing, business & marketing, biographies, books discussing the history of a particular genre or style of music, books about music collectibles, and critical works.

The Music collection includes an impressive collection of sheet music, which is the largest publicly circulating sheet music collection in Oregon, and one of the largest collections anywhere on the west coast. Classical music scores cover all eras from early music through the 21st century, and include solo instrumental and vocal music of major composers, beginning/intermediate instrumental books by instrument, chamber music with parts, theory and methods, miniature scores, opera, sacred music and hymns, and music history anthologies. The popular music scores include jazz, folk music, country, and other traditions, popular and folk music from around the world, scores for musicals and film soundtracks, children's songs, and religious music. The sheet music reference collection includes a special collection of original sheet music of popular songs dating from 1804 through 1990.

Recorded classical music and popular music are both purchased as well. The collection of popular recorded music includes jazz, blues, Christmas music, music of various folk traditions, rock and roll, country, rhythm and blues, rap, and popular music from around the world. The classical recordings complement the sheet music collection.

Students, teachers, composers, conductors, professionals, amateurs, and casual readers & listeners all use the Music collection. Because of the Music collection's comprehensive aspects, it serves as a backup collection for music students and faculty in local colleges.
