Charles Dickens: A Writer's Work

David Copperfield cover

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) is one of the most notable English writers. An editor of a journal, a contributor to newspapers and journals, a writer of plays, and an author of almost 30 books (many that chronicled the lives of the poor in Victorian England), Dickens was a prolific author whose works continue to be popular by today’s readers.

Because of the generosity of two significant donors, Genevieve Thompson Smith and Charles F. Adams, the John Wilson Special Collections has a substantial and rich collection of early materials by Charles Dickens. Currently on exhibit are several copies of the author's first edition serial publications, an autographed signed rejection letter (ALS) by Dickens, an original steel plate used for an illustration in the first edition of David Copperfield, and other highlights.
