Presentations
Multnomah County Library School Corps can provide these services for Multnomah County schools. The length of the presentations can be adjusted to meet your needs, but a minimum time is noted. Some presentations require special equipment; these needs are also described. All services are free of charge.
Online research tools
- Library catalog (grades 3-12, adult): Covers basic title, author and subject searches in the library's computerized catalog (either the text or Web version). Older students or educators can learn to use more advanced functions such as limiting, sorting and creating booklists. An Internet connection is required. 20-minute minimum.
- The Multnomah County Library of websites (grades 3-12, adult): A survey of the library's websites appropriate for your audience. May include the Kids, the Homework Center, or Teens. An Internet connection is required. 10-minute minimum (per site).
- Library databases A to Z (grades 4-12, adult): The library provides access to many databases useful to teachers and students. This training can include Magazines Online, The Oregonian database, Grolier Online Encyclopedia, Electric Library, Facts on File, Biographies Plus, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, Oregon Career Information System, or the Literature Resource Center. An Internet connection is required. Students will need their Multnomah County Library cards to access the databases. 30-minute minimum.
- Introduction to Search Engines and How to Evaluate websites (grades 6-12, adult): Covers basic Web searching and site evaluation skills, with a focus on the sites found in the library's Web directories. An Internet connection is required. 40-minute minimum.
- Live Homework Help (grades 4-12, adult): Learn how to access this program, which connects students one-on-one to qualified tutors online. Students will need their Multnomah County Library cards to use Live Homework Help. An Internet connection is required. 15-minute minimum.
- Think Before You Click (grades 4-12): This presentation about Internet safety and etiquette covers topics such as online privacy, advertising, spam, viruses, false information, and appropriate online behavior. Computer lab preferred. 45-minute minimum.
Books, Literacy, and Multnomah County Library
- Check This Place Out! (grades K-4): Answers basic questions about public libraries, including: What is a library? How do I get a library card? Requires an electrical outlet.15-minute minimum.
- Great Authors and Illustrators (grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-5): A look at some of the authors and illustrators of the books that young people like best, and how to find more about them on the Web. Requires an electrical outlet. 30-minute minimum.
- Feasting on Forbidden Fruit (grades 4-7 and 8-12): How does censorship affect children and teens? Presentation includes an overview of censorship issues in the U.S., a PowerPoint presentation on challenged books, and a chance for students to review banned and challenged picture books. Requires an electrical outlet. One hour minimum.
- Customized Booktalks (all ages): Encourage your students to read! We can present booktalks on hot new titles, current award winners or award nominees.
