1. What is MyLibraryDV?

MyLibraryDV is a video-on-demand service from Recorded Books for public libraries. You can access hundreds of hours of DVD-quality programming such as "America's Test Kitchen," "Rick Steves' Europe," "Antiques Roadshow," classic and independent films, and "Hollywood Favorites," popular movies released before 2002.

2. How do I use MyLibraryDV?

First-time visitors:

  1. Go to www.multcolib.org/services/mldv.html
  2. Click on "Get the download manager"
  3. Follow the installation instructions
  4. Choose a program to watch

Return visitors:

MyLibraryDV places an icon on your desktop (or another location of your choosing). Whenever you want to use MyLibraryDV, simply click on that icon and the service will launch. You can also return to the Multnomah County Library website from the MyLibraryDV interface.

The service is only available from remote locations – not on library computers – and requires a valid library card number.

3. What are the technical requirements?

MyLibraryDV's software will automatically detect and alert you of any necessary Player upgrades to access the service and will aid in their installation.

4. Can I use a Macintosh with the service?

The download manager for MyLibraryDV is a Windows file that will only install on a computer running Windows 2000 with SP4 or Windows XP with SP2. Your Macintosh will work if you have an Intel processor and software that enables you to switch back and forth between the Macintosh operating system and Windows, where you will download and install the MyLibraryDV download manager.

MyLibraryDV titles use copyright protection technology from Microsoft Corporation. Unfortunately, the Macintosh systems do not currently support this common form of copyright protection. Apple does not currently have business relationships with any vendor that supplies downloadable video content to libraries.

5. Can I use this on library computers?

MyLibraryDV is only available from remote computers. To protect library resources and customer privacy, public access computers have many strong security measures. MyLibraryDV needs access to a computer’s hard drive to work, and Multnomah County Library does not allow that on public access computers.

6. How long does it take to download a program?

It depends on the length of the program, the speed of your Internet connection, and the hardware configuration of the personal computer. If you already download other media content, you can expect the download times to be about the same.

7. How many programs can be checked out at one time?

You may have up to 10 downloaded programs at any given time (as long as you have enough space on your computer). Further limits may apply to films due to studio licensing restrictions. Details are included with each title.

8. How long can I keep a program?

Each program has a 7-day checkout period. On “Hollywood Favorites” titles, within the 7-day period, once you begin playing the movie, it will expire and be removed from your account in 24 hours.

9. Does this affect my holds limit?

No, MyLibraryDV is a separate service.

10. Can downloaded programs be stored on another computer?

MyLibraryDV only works on the computer to which the file was originally downloaded. Files cannot be transferred to an external device or another computer.

11. How do I delete a video when I’m done?

All programs are automatically deleted when the 7-day checkout period expires.

If you choose to delete programs manually (for example, if you need the space on your computer), you can delete programs inside of the download manager. However, programs you choose to delete still count towards your 10 allowable downloads (within the 7-day checkout period).

12. If I have additional questions, who do I ask?

General questions or comments about the service can be directed to Brandon A. Barnett at brandonb@multcolib.org.

If you are experiencing a technical problem not covered in this F.A.Q., please contact mldvsupport@recordedbooks.com.
