Questions and Answers about WiFi at Multnomah County Library

December 17, 2007

Multnomah County Library is pleased to offer wireless Internet access (WiFi) for users with wireless-enabled devices such as laptops or PDAs. Please review the library's WiFi policy.

What do I need to use the library's WiFi?

A laptop or other wireless-enabled device is needed to access WiFi. Wireless access uses the WiFi standard (also known as IEEE 802.11b).

If your laptop does not have wireless built in, you must purchase a WiFi-compatible network card. The library cannot guarantee that your equipment will work with the library's network.

How do I log on to the library's WiFi?

Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop or other wireless device to the library and turn it on. The device will automatically recognize the wireless network.

Click on multcolibrary to connect to the library's WiFi. You may find other networks, but they are not provided by the library.

There is no password, but you must consent to the click-through use agreement.

What are the rules for using WiFi?

WiFi users must comply with Acceptable Use of the Internet and Library Public Computers, Behavior Rules Governing the Use of Multnomah County Library and Wireless Internet Access at Multnomah County Library. View these documents on the library website or ask at any public service desk.

Can I print?

Printing is not available via WiFi. If you need to print, please save your work to a disk or USB drive or e-mail files to yourself. You can then sign up for a library Internet computer and access your files. Word documents may be printed at a blue-signed Internet computer station. Printing is 10¢ per page.

Can I use the electrical outlets?

Be prepared to use battery power. The library has limited electrical outlets. Do not plug into an outlet where you block the aisles, exits or access to materials. Do not unplug other equipment.

Is the information on my wireless device safe while I am connected?

Wireless connections are not secure; use caution when transmitting information. The library is not responsible for damage to software, hardware or files on equipment connected to the wireless network.

Please keep your electronic devices, and all of your personal belongings, with you at all times.

Do you offer technical assistance?

Library staff cannot perform repairs or troubleshoot your equipment, nor can they help you connect to the library's WiFi. For specific questions about your hardware or software, contact the manufacturer.

Which neighborhood libraries have WiFi?

Initially, WiFi is available at Gresham, Hillsdale, Holgate, Hollywood and St. Johns libraries. Each has a single wireless node, so the wireless signal may not be accessible in all parts of these buildings.

Where can I use WiFi at Central Library?

Currently, library WiFi is available in the Map Room of the Literature and History Library, located on the third floor.

Any wireless access in the Children's Library at Central Library is limited to individuals 14 years old or younger.
