Grades 9-12 Poetry Honorable Mention: "On the Fishing Dock" by Paige Jackson
The wind whispers sweet nothings to her as she stands on the dock dreaming of a better tomorrow.
The water rocks her back and forth in a slow rhythmic motion as she thinks of her troubles awaiting her at home.
The soft sounds of the waves hitting the sand are the most soothing thing she has ever heard.
She sits down on the edge of the dock and stares into the murky water.
She only comes here at night when she needs to think.
She knows that night is the only time this place will be peaceful.
When the sun rises her peaceful place will turn into a polluted headache.
When the light shows how disgusting and dirty the water is.
When the drug dealers come out to have there fun in the sun.
Yet when the moon is out this dock is a sweet escape.
Yet how strange is it that this place seems to transform at night.
Yet how amazing it is that she feels completely relaxed when standing on this dock just after the sun goes down.
On the dock she feels so peaceful and her thoughts are finally free.
On the dock with the moonlight behind her she can't help but stare at her reflection in the water and for once see the beauty everyone else sees.
On the dock she can dream, hope, and wish.
On the dock she is home.
