Grades 6-8 Poetry Honorable Mention: "Little Man" by Rose Jones
Lily's life was horrible, until Harvey showed up in her world....
Lily was taking a shortcut to her house through a dark alley way. Beside her she heard a garbage can fall over and a short little man fell out.
"Greetings from afar!" called the little man, "My name is Harvey and I come from Planet Bob."
"Um, hi Harvey," Replied Lily, "I'm Lily and I come from here."
"You come from alley way?" Asked Harvey.
"No, I come from Planet Earth which is here." Replied Lily.
"So Earth is alley way?" Harvey looked confused.
"Never mind."
"You will get one wish," Harvey said. "Because you saved me from this evil garbage can."
"I didn't really save you from the garbage can." Lily responded.
"Be sure to make your choice wisely."
"Okay, I wish for a plate full of cookies." Lily said, not taking the little man seriously.
Then suddenly a plate full of Lily's favorite cookies appeared out of nowhere in her hands.
"Tah dah!!" Said Harvey excitedly.
"What?! You were serious?" Lily yelled.
"Isn't that what you wanted?" asked Harvey.
"No!!" Lily cried.
"I'm no good at this!!" Harvey wailed.
"Can I have another wish?" asked Lily.
"Not unless you save me again."
"Okay, how?"
"How about I jump off a bridge and you save me," suggested Harvey.
"Sure, but won't people get suspicious?"
"Don't worry, they won't notice." reassured Harvey.
"How do you know?"
"Don't question, just hurry!" Yelled the little man.
?So off they went.
"Geronimo!!" Yelled Harvey, diving head first into the river.
Lily was treading water, waiting to catch the little man. SPLASH!! She had him in her arms and swam to shore.
Once they were safe on the banks of the river, Harvey said, "You did it! You get another wish."
"Okay, this is what is making my life horrible, my mother is a drug addict. I wish she was a normal mother." Lily replied.
Once she got home that evening her wish had come true.
"Honey, it's time for dinner!" called her Mother.
