What things do volunteers help with?

We have a variety of opportunities for people to help the library provide its many services to the community. Some of the opportunities are shelving and checking in materials, assisting in our computer labs and providing various outreach services. View current opportunities.

Where can I volunteer?

All 19 library locations, library administration and outreach programs have volunteer opportunities.

What is the time commitment for volunteering?

Many of our positions require a minimum commitment of 3 months. Some positions require more training and longer commitments of 6 months to a year. Positions that teach technology or involve outreach activities typically require the longer commitment. A typical shift is 2 hours once a week.

What if I only want to volunteer for a couple of weeks?

Our positions require a regular on-going commitment. Our minimum required commitment is 3 months. If you are looking for short-term volunteer opportunities other organizations may be able to help.

Can I work different days and times each week?

The library relies on our volunteers to commit to a set schedule each week.

What is the minimum age required for volunteering?

12 or older for most positions.

Can I complete service hours for school?

Maybe. Contact Volunteer Services to talk about your options. We have limited opportunities for students that need to complete 10 hours or less of service.

Can I complete community service hours that are court-referred?

While you cannot complete court mandated hours within the Multnomah County Library system, there are other organizations in the community that have opportunities to complete your service hours. For possible opportunities contact:
