What things do volunteers help with?
We have a variety of opportunities for people to help the library provide its many services to the community. Some of the opportunities are shelving and checking in materials, assisting in our computer labs and providing various outreach services. View current opportunities.
Where can I volunteer?
All 17 library locations, library administration and outreach programs have volunteer opportunities.
What is the time commitment for volunteering?
Many of our positions require a minimum commitment of 3 months. Some positions require more training and longer commitments of 6 months to a year. Positions that teach technology or involve outreach activities typically require the longer commitment. A typical shift is 2 hours once a week.
Can I work different days and times each week?
The library relies on our volunteers to commit to a set schedule each week.
What is the minimum age required for volunteering?
12 or older for most positions. The Summer Reading program has a minimum age of 10.
Can I complete service hours for school?
Maybe. Contact Volunteer Services to talk about your options. We have limited opportunities for students that need to complete 10 hours or less of service. Teen Community Service Crew programs.
Can I complete community service hours that are court-referred?
Maybe. The library does not provide volunteer opportunities for court referrals that involve theft, violence or crimes against children. If your court referral does not involve the above crimes, there may be opportunities available. All potential volunteers must go through our standard application and interview process, which typically takes 2–6 weeks.
What if I only want to volunteer for a couple of weeks?
Our positions require a regular on-going commitment. Our minimum required commitment is 3 months. If you are looking for short-term volunteer opportunities other organizations may be able to help.
Can my group do a project with a Library?
Maybe. The library occasionally has opportunities for community groups. Please contact Volunteer Services for details.
Do you offer internships?
Yes. Prior to contacting us about opportunities have the following prepared:
- Current resume with relevant course work
- An idea of what types of skills you are hoping to develop
- Knowledge of requirements of your program
