English speaking volunteers are needed to provide one-on-one help to the public as they access library resources using the computers at all Neighborhood Libraries and Central Library. Volunteers who speak Spanish are needed at the North Portland, St. Johns, Rockwood, Hillsdale and Midland libraries.
If you are computer savvy and enjoy helping others, this is the job for you!
Cyber Seniors Trainer or Assistant
Specially trained volunteers help older people learn to use computers. We particularly need Cyber Seniors trainers in East County!

Service to children
Summer Reading Program Assistant
Register children to play in the Summer Reading game, award prizes and talk with kids about the books they have read.
This is a fun opportunity for middle and high school students!
Book Talker
The Books 2 U program uses highly trained volunteers to encourage and inspire elementary school students to read for personal enjoyment and to use the library. This job is interesting for people who love to read children's literature and enjoy public speaking!
Books 2 U is part of Connecting for Kids, an initiative to ensure third-graders are reading at grade level. Volunteers may be eligible for free transportation through Flexcar.
Homework Helper
Assist a variety of students to find the information they need to complete homework assignments in the library. Help students become familiar with library resources, both print and electronic. Assist students as they define what they need in the library. Introduce kids to library resources!
ROAR! Story Reader
Reach Out And Read makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. ROAR volunteers read to children in health clinic waiting rooms serving as a model for parents. ROAR is a national program and a partnership between Multnomah County Library and pediatric staff at Portland area health clinics. Spanish and English speaking volunteers are needed!
Storytime Reader with Raising A Reader Program
Share the excitement of children's literature with very young children. Trained volunteers will present half-hour storytimes to small groups of preschoolers in east county locations. Raising A Reader volunteers will be trained to use interactive storytelling techniques to engage young children. Readers help build a friendly, supportive relationship with staff and children. This is a good job for volunteers who are interested in nurturing young children and fostering their development!

Books While You Wait Delivery
Trained volunteers are the backbone of this distinctive outreach program designed to furnish children's books in waiting rooms and lobbies where parents and children are waiting for medical or social services. Picture books and easy readers are provided. It only takes a few hours once a month to deliver books and maintain the book collections.
Share books with parents and children while they wait for appointments!
Service to teens
Homework Helper for Teen Lounge
Trained volunteers will supervise students and help them use library resources in an after-school setting. Volunteers needed at for teen lounges at Belmont, Capitol Hill, Gregory Heights, Hillsdale, North Portland and St. Johns libraries.
This is a great opportunity to work with teens!
"Bookish" positions
Branch Assistants
Volunteers help with a variety of tasks including check-in, shelving and sorting library materials to expedite their flow.
This is a great volunteer position for people who love handling books and other library materials!
Title Wave Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to run our truly unique used bookstore, The Title Wave. Volunteers process incoming books, prepare the store for opening and closing, provide customer service, restock and arrange merchandise and ring up sales using cash, checks and charge cards. Training is provided. All proceeds go directly back to the library.
If you have always wanted to work in a bookstore, this job is for you!

Read Aloud Friend
Read to elder residents in Portland area care facilities as part of the Library's Visiting Voices program. The time commitment is about 2 to 4 hours a week. If you enjoy being with elders and reading aloud, consider volunteering for Visiting Voices!
Cyber Seniors Trainer
Specially trained volunteers will help older people learn to use library and Web based resources using computers by conducting training at Central and neighborhood libraries.
Volunteers will learn about fascinating databases and Web sites!
Service to adults
Citizenship teacher
Volunteers to teach classes to help people pass the citizenship test at Gregory Heights neighborhood library. Volunteers will first complete training by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. Then they will teach weekly classes using U.S.C.I.S. curriculum.

Talk Time facilitator
Volunteers facilitate weekly conversation circle to encourage non-native English speakers to meet together and practice speaking English.
